WHAT DO YOUR LOCAL AUTHORITIES DO FOR DISABLED PEOPLE?

Able Magazine explores Britains accessible beaches and finds out what local authorities and disability organisations are doing to enable access to their beaches.

[ClickPress, Tue Jul 17 2007] The British summer this year has far from met our usual expectations, however we are ever hopeful for that long awaited burst of sunshine that will see us all dashing to the nearest beach! But can we really all enjoy the pleasures of the British beaches?

Able Magazine decided to explore the accessibility of some British beaches to find out what local authorities and disability organisations are doing to enable access to their beaches.

Brighton and the surrounding area is a very popular summer spot, that has holidaymakers flocking to its’ shores. During the summer months, seafront officers from Brighton and Hove Council roll out a special matting that provides a smooth surface across Brighton beach, allowing wheelchair users and people who use walking aids easy access over the pebbles.

Meanwhile, just 30miles along the coast you will find Hastings Beach. This beach offers the same special matting and also has two lightweight beach chairs that are designed with floats to allow those with mobility problems to enjoy a quick dip in the sea. The chairs are free to use or you can pay £2 for 30minutes in the water with a lifeguard.

These local authorities should be recognised for playing an important role in providing these accessible mats and floating wheelchairs to ensure their beaches can be enjoyed by all.
