Clare County Council has today signed two contracts totalling EUR1.5m with Response Engineering Ltd. of Charleville, Co. Cork to provide Mechanical and Electrical works for water supply improvement schemes in Newmarket and Fergus and Ballyvaughan.

Welcoming the developments, Mayor of Clare Cllr Patricia McCarthy commented, "These are important contracts that will further improve the services infrastructure of the Ballyvaughan-Fanore and Newmarket-on-Fergus-Bunratty areas."

According to Hugh McGrath, Senior Executive Engineer, Water Services, Clare County Council, "Newmarket on Fergus, Bunratty, Ballyvaughan, Fanore and their surrounding areas continue to experience considerable growth in terms of developments and population. Therefore, it is essential that this be matched with the provision of important infrastructure such as water services. This is a very significant project that will cater for the development needs of these areas well into the future."

Civil contracts involving pipelaying and reservoir construction works on the Ballyvaughan and Newmarket on Fergus schemes commenced in early 2007.

Work on the Ballyvaughan area scheme includes an extension of the recently completed Lisdoonvarna Water Supply and the extension of the watermain to deliver treated water from the North Clare Regional Water Treatment Plant in Ballymacraven, as far as Ballyvaughan.

14km of a new water distribution system are being laid from the east of Lisdoonvarna to the village of Ballyvaughan. The system is being constructed along the route of the N67, via Corkscrew Hill. Works also include the provision of an additional 3,000-m3 storage through provision of a service reservoir at Corkscrew Hill (Gragan West).

Meanwhile, improvements to the Newmarket-on-Fergus Water Supply Scheme include bringing treated water to Newmarket-on-Fergus from Castlelake Water Treatment Plant, located approximately 3km north of Sixmilebridge, via the 600 mm watermain already laid as part of Contract 1 and 2 of the Scheme.

Water is also being boosted from a 300 mm branch off the 600 mm main a new 5000 cu.m reservoir at Barnhill, which is located to the north of the village. In addition, Castlelake Water Treatment Plant is being upgraded, while a 200mm distribution main is being connected to the N18 at Bunratty.

Improvement works to both schemes are scheduled to be complete by April 2008.
