Latest eFinancialCareers.com poll reveals importance of networking

[ClickPress, Mon Jul 30 2007] How important are contacts to landing jobs at leading global banks? With Euan Blair interning at UBS and Prince William having recently interned with HSBC, it seems the proverb “it’s all in who you know” is back in vogue.

According to the latest research by eFinancialCareers.com – the UK-based global financial careers website – 73% of students polled believe personal contacts and networking are the most important assets to have for securing a job in a leading financial institution.

Of the remaining, 15% consider it utterly irrelevant, believing that personal ability and the right character merits a job; while 7.5% think it is fairly important and 2.5% view it as not very important.

Sarah Butcher, editor of eFinancialCareers.com, said:
“Whilst job boards have changed the way students look for work, smart job seekers know not to rely on them exclusively. Often talking to people within the industry can produce excellent openings – a point that today’s recruits appear acutely sensitive to. However, although contacts may help a graduate get their foot through the door, the key to a successful career will always be ability - not who you know.”

The eFinancialCareers.com poll was conducted via the company’s website over a 2 week period from 9th July to 23rd July 2007.
