UKIP MEP Derek Clark joins rally to fight for Bombardier

Derby MEP Derek Clark will tomorrow (Wednesday) join hundreds of campaigners in London fighting to save the country’s rail industry.

The UKIP MEP will join Labour’s Derby MP Chris Williamson outside the Houses of Parliament as pressure grows on the Government to re-think its decision to award a major rail contract to a German firm.

Mr Williamson has written to Conservative and Liberal Democrat MPs asking for their support to overturn the Government's controversial decision not to award the Thameslink rail contract to Derby train-maker Bombardier.

The disastrous decision will cost hundreds of jobs both at the Bombardier plant in Derby and across industries in general, particularly throughout Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

The on-going campaign – to re-think the decision to give the multi-million pound contract to German firm Siemens - has already received cross-party support at Derby City Council as well as backing from several Labour MPs and local Conservative MPs.

Mr Clark said: "This campaign has seen support from different sections of both the social and political spectrum and it is right politicians from different parties should be pledging their support.

"I was at the rally and campaign march in Derby in July and the level of support for Bombardier was breath-taking.

"We must fight for British jobs for British people. We must make the Government think again on this decision, which will wreck lives and communities in Derby.

"I am happy to support the Bombardier cause at every turn and so far UKIP has been the only party to take this fight to the EU and ask questions about why this contract has gone abroad.

"I call on more politicians to put aside their political persuasions and help fight for jobs for the people of Derby and beyond."

The protest will take place outside the Houses of Parliament, following a meeting of The Transport Select Committee, which will take evidence on UK rolling stock procurement issues, and Prime Minister’s Questions.
