RNLI buoyed by TOPCALL technology

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is rolling out TOPCALL’s unified communications technology to run alongside its new IP-based telephony system.

The charity is initially implementing TOPCALL technology for staff in its headquarters in Poole, allowing staff to fax from their desktops, receive voicemail messages as email attachments, and access emails as voice messages via any telephone. There are plans to roll out a further 18 major remote sites, totalling over 1,000 users.

The RNLI chose to work with TOPCALL because its system was fully compatible with the RNLI’s Novell GroupWise email system. In addition, its ease-of-use helped keep staff training costs to a minimum.

"As the RNLI operates lifeboats throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland, one of the major benefits is to employees who can access their emails by phone when they are on the road," said Chris Bartlett, RNLI’s network and telecoms manager. "This aspect of the technology is being trialled by a number of users at the moment and we’re rolling it out on a needs-must basis as it is most useful for staff who work remotely."
