Sinterklaas in Amsterdam is one of the few chances where children will be able to get a glimpse of the man with the white beard, before he goes off delivering his presents on Christmas Eve. There will be a grand celebration for Sinterklaas’ arrival and thousands of people are expected to turn out to see the famous saint.

Sinterklaas will be heading to Amsterdam on 14th November 2011 by steamboat and the first opportunity to see him will be as he travels along the Amstel River, passing the Nieuwe Herengracht and onto the Maritime Museum. Mayor Cohen will then welcome St. Nicholas before he sets off on his magnificent white horse in a parade that follows Prins Hendrikkade onto Damrak and then to Dam Square.

At Dam Square live bands will be entertaining the crowds along with acrobats and Saint Nicholas’ hard working helpers, the ‘Black Peters’ or Zwarte Pieten, so called due to their black appearance as they’ve climbed down the city’s chimneys and been covered in soot. The Zwarte Pieten will be busy handing out sweets and cookies and people can then follow the parade as it heads off to finish at the Leidseplein.

Lek Boonlert, marketing head at DirectRooms.com commented: "As people head to the city to see Santa, hotels in Amsterdam City Centre are going to be filling up with people attending the parade."
