DirectRooms.com – Dusseldorf goes wild for the arrival of the Hoppeditz on 11 November 2011

Published: Fri Oct 07 2011

The Hoppeditz is a jester like character and on 11th November he’ll be giving his traditional speech to the gathered masses in front of City Hall. The comical address will recount the main news stories and public figures are sure to receive a bashing as the city’s personal joker entertains the crowds.

For the event residents will be wildly dressed in colourful clown and jester outfits and the whole city is set to erupt with a carnival atmosphere. Such is the scale of the party that Dusseldorf is said to have the world’s longest bar as virtually every bar in the old district opens its doors to welcome in the carnival spirit.

After all the celebrations and laughter, the last act of the carnival will see people gathering for the burning of the Hoppeditz. Not the actual jester that gave the speech, but instead an effigy will be set on fire and the ashes placed in a coffin until the character is revealed again the following year.

Lek Boonlert, marketing head at DirectRooms.com commented: "Thousands of people will be taking part in the carnival and Dusseldorf City Centre hotels are going to be at full occupancy. To be guaranteed a room for the night visitors should book online and at least a few weeks in advance."
