Victorian Canine Rescue is encouraging senior Victorians to improve their health and lifestyle by adopting a dog or becoming a canine ‘foster’ carer.

Victorian Canine Rescue (VCR) is among the first canine ‘foster care’ organisation in Victoria, helping to relieve the burden on over-crowded shelters and pounds while providing an adoption alternative for prospective pet owners.

Established in January this year, VCR rescues impounded dogs facing euthanasia and places them with ‘foster carers’ until a permanent home can be found.

Rachael Stead, VCR co-founder, says older dogs are often more appropriate companions for seniors.

"Numerous studies have revealed that pet owners are healthier, more active and visit the doctor less," she said.

"Seniors who care for or adopt older dogs gain satisfaction from knowing they have saved a life, are provided with the companionship of an animal and do not require the excessive energy levels needed to deal with puppies."

VCR also provides a service for seniors who are forced to give up their animals. Two dogs aged 10 and 12 were recently rescued when their owner moved into a nursing home. Both were earmarked for euthanasia due to their age despite being healthy, active animals capable of providing friendship for many years.

Each year approximately 60,000 dogs are euthanised in Australia as pressure is placed on pounds and shelters to make room for new strays. VCR aims to contribute to a decline in that figure by promoting canine foster care and adoption.

VCR is a not-for-profit community based organisation comprising approximately 30 members. They rely on donations to cover the cost of desexing, microchipping and vaccinating dogs prior to adoption.
