National Homebuyers: Govt slammed over housing Bill

The government has been slammed by the Liberal Democrats over its Housing and Regeneration Bill.

[ClickPress, Fri Nov 30 2007] According to the Lib Dems, the Bill "represents a missed opportunity" for millions of people and does little to help first-time buyers (FTBs) onto the property ladder.

Fewer FTBs is bad news if you are looking for someone to buy your property as it means that it becomes a buyer's market.

"It is shocking that it has taken the government ten years to wake up to the housing crisis. Although there are some welcome measures in this Bill, they come far too late for the millions affected by Labour's neglect," said Paul Holmes, Lib Dem shadow housing minister.

"This Bill represents a missed opportunity to put right a decade of Labour's failed and discredited housing policies.

"The government seems content to continue the cowboy policies and errors of judgement that caused the problem in the first place," he added.

"A lack of buyers, with a surge of properties expected to hit the market in the first quarter next year means that buyers can control the price of properties for sale. This also means that it will take the homeseller longer to find an available buyer for their property.

"This will make a fast property sale ever more difficult".
