[ClickPress, Thu Dec 13 2007] A powerful and challenging PSHE resource will be launched by Dramatic Media at BETT 2008. This film led resource is called Young Parents – Pressures and Problems.
‘Young Parents Pressures and Problems’ is part of Dramatic Media’s ‘Young Life’ series and includes a powerful film drama called ‘Holding On’. The film was researched, written and produced by Dramatic Media and is the moving story of a teenage couple, struggling with the challenges of parenthood.
Nicki and Lee, the young parents, live in a rented flat with their six-month-old daughter, Poppy. However, when Social Services become involved with the family, concerned that Poppy could be ‘at risk’; tensions arise between the young parents. Will Poppy be put on the Child Protection Register and be placed with foster carers, or will Nicki and Lee overcome their problems and provide a safe home for their child?
Shot on location in the Isle of Man, the film was researched and written by Julie Laslett and Caroline Webster, the co-founders of Dramatic Media. The film is a ‘warts and all’ portrayal of young people coming to terms with the responsibilities of caring for a child. Well-known TV and film actor, Ian Mercer (Coronation Street, Master and Commander) plays Nicki’s Dad, and young actors, Beccy Armory and Liam Barr play Nicki and Lee.
Caroline Webster, who as an actress became a familiar face on our TV screens as ‘Jane Scott’, a paramedic in BBC1’s popular drama ‘Casualty’, directed the film. “We wanted young people to gain an understanding of the pressures having a child puts on one’s personal life and relationships”, said Caroline. “The film and the resource activities explore the experiences of parenting and touch on issues such as child abuse by neglect, alcohol abuse, adoption and bereavement.”
The resource pack is aimed at pupils at Key Stage 4 and contains a DVD of the film, additional interviews with the main characters, a book of comprehensive teacher notes and pupil sheets. There is a series of 8 weekly lessons in this pack, complete with pupil sheets, which cover half a term of weekly PSHE lessons. Alternatively, the resource can be delivered as an ‘Enrichment Day’ and the book contains a section, complete with a sample timetable, of workshop activities and detailed teacher’s drama notes.
Dramatic Media will be demonstrating Young Parents – Pressures and Problems on their stand A69 in the Grand Hall at BETT.
