ERP UK soars past the 10,000-tonne mark

The European Recycling Platform (ERP) has announced that it recycled more than 10,000 tonnes of waste electrical goods in the UK during the first three months of the new WEEE regime. With significant amounts of data yet to be collected, the final quarterly total may be as high as 15,000 tonnes, reconfirming ERP’s position as one of the leading WEEE compliance schemes in the UK.

[ClickPress, Wed Jan 09 2008] The European Recycling Platform (ERP) has announced that it recycled more than 10,000 tonnes of waste electrical goods in the UK during the first three months of the new WEEE regime. With significant amounts of data yet to be collected, the final quarterly total may be as high as 15,000 tonnes, reconfirming ERP’s position as one of the leading WEEE compliance schemes in the UK.

Scott Butler, ERP’s General Manager for the UK, comments, “I’m delighted by these figures, but I’m not surprised. ERP UK has always been confident that our huge experience in WEEE management, gained through our operations throughout Europe and combined with our open and pragmatic approach to partnerships with local authorities, would pay dividends.”

Founded by Braun, Electrolux, HP and Sony, ERP now has over 1,050 member companies across Europe and has recycled over 200,000 tonnes of WEEE in total. However, although ERP UK has collection contracts covering more than 300 designated collection facilities (DCF) in the UK, Butler stresses that size alone is not ERP’s objective. “We don’t need ERP to be the UK’s biggest compliance scheme – rather, we aim to be the size that delivers the best possible value for our members,” he says. “That means keeping a balance between our members’ obligations and our collection contracts – and so far, we’re doing just that.”

ERP UK plans to sustain its strong growth into 2008 and beyond.

The European Recycling Platform (ERP) was set up in December 2002 by Braun, Electrolux, HP and Sony in response to the introduction of the European Union’s Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment (WEEE) Directive. ERP is already operational in eight countries – in Austria, France, Germany, Ireland, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and the UK. Operations are due to start later this year in Italy.
