Young drivers need greater protection to stem the rising tide of injuries and fatalities amongst teenage road users warns combined car purchase and low cost insurance scheme, Young Marmalade after new research suggests young male drivers are responsible for a third of all motoring convictions.

[ClickPress, Tue Jan 15 2008] Government figures released by the national Ministry of Justice also show that young male drivers are sixty times more likely to commit more serious motoring offences than any other group of road users. One in five will have accidents during their first year at the wheel and the greatest killer of teenage girls on the road is young male drivers.

All of this adds up to a grim picture of death and destruction with tragedy on the roads claiming more and more young lives. However, a greater emphasis on road safety while learning to drive and easier access to more affordable, modern vehicles for newly qualified drivers would lead to much fewer accidents.

Crispin Moger, spokesperson for Young Marmalade said: “A number of factors contribute to accidents. While some of these include bravado and driving after drinking, our research shows that the switch from a modern driving school car replete with safety features to a less responsive, older vehicle also plays its part.”

“Providing a new driver with a car capable of protecting them if the worst does happen and offering incentives for drivers to take additional road safety classes is at the core of Young Marmalade. We believe that these measures will reduce the number of fatalities, giving teenage drivers the opportunity to learn from their mistakes.”

The purchase and low cost insurance combination gives young drivers – and their parents- a foot on the ladder of new car purchase and cheap insurance. Supplying new and nearly new cars, extensively tested for their safety and suitability, Young Marmalade has a stock of thousands of vehicles scoring a minimum of four out of five NCAP stars for safety. The car ownership launch pad is linked to low cost, fully comprehensive cover based on postcode not age of the driver. With Young Marmalade, a 17-year-old female driver’s annual premium is just £543 while a 17-year-old male driver can take to the open road, fully insured for as little as £973 a year.
Young Marmalade also makes it easier for young drivers to access further training with information on a number of schemes including Pass Plus, RoADAR, Skills for Life and Drive and Survive.
