FOOTBALL LEGENDS TO HIT THE HEADLINES AT FELLOWS & SONS AUCTION
A hat-trick of signed football memorabilia will go under the hammer at a Fellows & Sons auction in Birmingham next week.
[ClickPress, Wed Jan 23 2008] One of the auction’s more poignant pieces will be an autograph album signed by the famous ‘Busby Babes’ team that played for Manchester United manager Sir Matt Busby in the 1950s, including Duncan Edwards, Mark Jones, David Pegg and Liam Whelan. The item is expected to fetch between £1,500 and £1,800.
Next month sees the 50th anniversary of the Munich air disaster, when eight of the Busby Babes died in a plane crash on their return from a game in Europe.
That same album is also signed by players from Birmingham City, Manchester City, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Blackpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Also in the sale which takes place next Tuesday (29 January) at 10:30am is a Manchester United keyring featuring a booklet which unfolds to reveal photos of club legends George Best, Denis Law, Bobby Charlton and many others.
The third football-themed item set to capture the imagination is a ‘Champions of Europe’ commemorative record to celebrate Aston Villa’s 1982 European Cup win, which is signed by the squad and will be a popular choice for many local football fans.
Stephen Whittaker, managing partner at Fellows & Sons, said: “There is always a sense of great anticipation around signed football themed items such as these, with fans desperate to get their hands on a piece of classic memorabilia.
“The autograph album is obviously an item that took much hard work to compile, as it features some of the game’s most famous names from the Busby Babes and various West Midlands clubs.”
