[ClickPress, Thu Mar 13 2008] The rich and the famous want British Mary Poppins to look after their children hence the demand for British nannies to work abroad has hit record levels with bumper pay and perks offered by families overseas who rate British childcarers as the best in the world. The demand is being fuelled by TV programmes that feature British nannies and have become worldwide hits such as Supernanny and Nanny 911. Emigrating families are also keen to keep British childcarers.
Figures from Tinies, the UK’s largest childcare agency, show that in 2007 there was a 57 per cent increase in jobs abroad for British nannies. That follows a 20 per cent increase in 2006.
Competition is so fierce for British nannies that families are willing to beat the wages on offer in the UK which stand at almost £30,000 for a London based nanny. One family living in Moscow offered a pay and perks package worth almost £80,000 for a British nanny.
Tinies now operates offices in Australia, New Zealand and Bermuda and has a team in London dedicated to meeting the foreign demand. Oliver Black, director of Tinies, said there was no sign of the demand dampening down.
“During 2007 we dealt with 313 overseas jobs. That compares with just over 200 in 2006 which in itself was well up on 2005. Many of the British nannies stay in the jobs for several years so I would estimate there are more than 5000 working abroad at anyone time.
“There is no doubt that the popularity of Jo Frost on Supernanny is one of the reasons why British childcarers are seen as the best and historically we have the Mary Poppins image of the traditional British nanny. We are seeing parents, many from America and Russia, coming over to London for a week, taking a suite at a top hotel and interviewing several candidates.
“Bermuda is a particularly hot spot for us and we also have a local office in Australia and New Zealand. The Russian job was a particularly generous package but it is not unusual for the £40,000 barrier to be broken. We also find that when British families are moving abroad they want to take with them the childcare they are familiar with,” he said.
Among the Tinies nannies working abroad is Brita Little, 32, from London who has a pay and perks package worth £50,000. She looks after two children in Bermuda – Isabella six and Jaques, four. “There is quite a group of UK nannies out here in Bermuda. It is a great job and a really good way to see the world and meet new people. Parents like to have a qualified and trustworthy childcarer and often want their children to be communicating in English. I did not go into the job for the money, but it is a good package and a great place to live,” she said.
