Rebirth of an American Classic

Published: Tue Oct 22 2013

Panhead Jim started Riding Vintage in August of 2012 and in the past 14 months has built a loyal following of vintage motorcycle enthusiasts and owners. The site features top notch historic photography coupled with investigative reporting on a wide variety of topics, mostly centered on American motorcycles built before 1965. This winter Panhead Jim plans to leave the world of black and white photography behind to give his readers a chance to see the restoration of a 1933 Harley-Davidson VL in full color.

To further blend the worlds of high tech and low tech, Riding Vintage has decided to use the crowdfunding site Indiegogo to help raise funds for this project. In exchange for sponsoring the build, readers will have full access to the entire restoration process. Panhead Jim will be starting with just a set of matched engine cases and going through each process step by step as he builds this one of a kind machine. Readers will stay up to date with every greasy detail via Facebook, Twitter, Riding Vintage, email newsletters, photos and videos. From wheel bearings to final tuning it will all be digitized and made available for viewing.

Once completed, the motorcycle will be shipped to California and then ridden back across the US by Panhead Jim. He will be joined by one additional rider on a 1934 Harley-Davidson VLD, but there will not be any additional trucks or trailers in support of the trip. At various stages throughout the ride, readers will have a chance to meet Panhead Jim and see the motorcycle in person.
