Recent Study: Internet Retailing in the Netherlands

Internet retailing saw healthy growth in 2013 although growth was not as high as it was over the review period as a whole. The category is demonstrating some signs of maturity, and continued worries regarding the economy limited growth as well as many consumers trying to limit their spending to balance their budget. The result was that Internet retailing registered a very positive performance, but did not reach double-digit growth as was frequently the case over the review period.

Competitive Landscape

Ahold is one of the major Internet retailing companies as the owner of online grocery retailer Albert.nl took over leading online retailer Bol.com in 2012. The takeover proved to be a good move by Albert Heijn as both retail brands demonstrated healthy growth in sales value in 2013. Ahold sees the takeover as a major strategic move for the company as a whole, and proved it is serious in making Bol.com an integral part of the company by rolling out pick-up points for Bol.com orders at its Albert Heijn supermarket outlets. Another example is that Bol.com and Albert Heijn started to promote the same products at the same price. For instance, Albert Heijn started to sell Sony e-readers in 2013 for EUR99.00, the same price as Bol.com. By entering into these joint promotions, Ahold hopes to sell a greater volume of these non-food items.

Industry Prospects

For the forecast period further growth is predicted. In fact, growth of Internet retailing is likely to see a slight acceleration compared with the growth registered in 2013. As the economy will pick up slowly and consumer confidence is restored, growth of the category is likely to be higher than in 2013. Of course, Internet retailing has entered a new phase in its development and is now more mature. It is therefore not realistic to expect the same strong double-digit growth as shown over the review period.
