Players are rather satisfied by the performance of digestive remedies in 2013, in spite of some disappointing results. On the one side, conversely to some border countries, the French market for digestive remedies is not affected by scandals or a negative climate - in Belgium, the category pays notably for a scandal about Motilium. In addition, there is limited cannibalisation between PPI and antacids. Lastly, according to retailers, ailments such as gastroenteritis and diarrhoea experience less intense peaks now, but are present for longer periods, which will sustain sales of diarrhoeal remedies in 2014.

Competitive Landscape

Digestive remedies has one of the less fragmented competitive landscapes in consumer healthcare. Two players, PGT Healthcare and Johnson & Johnson Sante Beaute France and the whole generics fight in a tight space, each holding a value of 11-12% in 2013. PGT Healthcare is leader by a slight margin from the merger with Teva Pharmaceutical Industries in 2012. It has two brands, Vogalib in motion sickness remedies and Spasfon in IBS treatments. Growingly used for self-medication, the former still progressed in 2012 and 2013 in spite of the declining proportion of French consumers going on holidays. This is notably attributed to its polyvalent role - Vogalib can be useful for other troubles than motion sickness - and its convenience - it can be swallowed without water.

Industry Prospects

The outlook for digestive remedies remains uncertain according to most sources, with most predicting a modest performance in coming years, in continuation of the progression of the category during the bulk of the review period. Sales of digestive remedies should not drop however, notably thanks to the contribution of some products. Proton pump inhibitors are likely to forge ahead thanks to the growing awareness by consumers of the benefits of such products. Meanwhile, the blockbuster brands in antacids, Maalox and Gaviscon, should keep their complementary role. While PPIs have systemic and long-term action, antacids have a symptomatic effect but remain useful thanks to their immediate effect.
