With more than 1,300 stores across Canada, Shoppers, which operates under the name Pharmaprix in the French-speaking province of Quebec, is by far the largest player in the category. The company, which was recently acquired by another retail behemoth, Loblaws', has among the best consumer data information in the country, thus helping it enact targeted sales campaigns, ensure the correct product mix for its client demographics and cater to its markets across the country. As consumer data becomes increasingly important in the retail race in Canada, Shoppers is among the leaders in this area and this is expected to help the company maintain its number one position in the coming years. Furthermore, Canada's ageing population plays perfectly to the businesses in the parapharmacy category, such as Shoppers, which is capitalising on this. The retailer now offers a wide range of non-traditional items, such as consumer electronics, food and clothing, helping make it a one-stop-shop for many consumers.
