Chileans are increasingly using design, fashion and low unit price as the main criteria to select footwear. Consumers are currently interested in a more convenient experience when shopping, but without losing the design or fashionable features of footwear. This favours volume sales and price competition, driving private label brands to work on their designs, but keep prices low. Companies which favour quality over price suffered a decrease in sales (such as Forus and Bata Chile). Fashion trends are led by sports-inspired footwear - mainly adidas and Puma products - which are located in the upper-end of the price range. This volume increase/price decrease trend affected sales growth of footwear: from growth of 10% in 2011, sales of footwear only increased by 2% in 2012.

Competitive Landscape

Forus led footwear in the Chilean market in 2012 with a 14% value share, which was a slight decrease compared with 2011 (16% share). Behind Forus there is a second group of companies, led by Bata with an 8% value share, a highly competitive group which includes hypermarkets and department stores such as Falabella (4% share) and Wal-Mart Chile (3% share), and sports footwear companies such as adidas Chile (5% share), Nike de Chile (6% share) and Puma Chile (5% share).

Industry Prospects

Design at lower cost is expected to drive consumption of footwear over the forecast period. However, the expectations are fairly conservative (2% CAGR over the forecast period) as the footwear market is showing some signs of stagnation. The footwear market will be driven by a trend of lower prices, increasing the competition for added-value in terms of design rather than quality or durability. Sports-inspired footwear will lead this trend, offering urban and high-design footwear at reasonable prices, and also linking this kind of footwear with urban subcultures and social trends through advertising and the sponsorship of musical and artistic events.
