From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Wed Jul 09 2014

Canned/preserved food is still in a nascent stage in India, and continued to witness strong volume growth in 2013. Canned/preserved food packaging managed to register unit growth of 14% in 2013 to reach 106 million units. This growth was driven mainly by the urban working class as demand for convenience among these consumers was on the rise. Healthy growth in the Indian economy over the review period led to consumers having higher disposable incomes. Rapid urbanisation and the strong growth of modern retail outlets over the review period also led to the increased availability of canned/preserved food products. Prevailing high inflation in the country also led to canned/preserved food products becoming more economical for consumers when compared with fresh food products. Canned/preserved food products also have an added advantage of a longer shelf life compared with fresh food, and can be used as and when they are required. A number of canned/preserved food products, such as exotic fruit and vegetables, are available in India only in canned format. As these products are not available in fresh form, consumers are increasingly consuming canned/preserved food products.

Industry Prospects

The Indian economy is expected to continue to perform strongly over the forecast period. A strong economic performance would lead to increased disposable incomes, rapid urbanisation and the growth of modern retail outlets. An increasing number of women are joining the work force in India, and this trend is expected to accelerate in coming years. This trend is leading to Indian consumers demanding more convenience in food products to help them save time. Canned/preserved food products offer convenience in terms of usage, storage and a longer shelf life compared with fresh food products. Hence, canned/preserved food packaging is expected to register a strong off-trade unit CAGR of 10% to reach 173 million units in 2018, due to the prevailing trend towards convenience in the country.Overview
