Home Care Packaging in Brazil - New Study Released

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Mon Jul 21 2014

In 2012, home care packaging remained flat. In terms of packaging format, the market was led by rigid plastic with a 62% volume share, followed by paper-based containers (21%) and metal (10%). The Canadian home care packaging industry is reacting to this stagnation by losing smaller competitors. The larger packaging manufacturers are surviving thanks to their diversity and through picking up business that was once claimed by smaller manufacturers. Prices of raw materials are increasing overseas and freighters are sitting in ports for longer periods of time while waiting to be filled. This is increasing lead times for raw materials.

Industry Prospects

Packaging unit volumes in home care are projected to remain flat over the forecast period. However, there remain opportunities for growth, as evidenced by the number of new product launches in the previous few years. The problem, however, is that such innovations depend on consumers changing their behaviour. Demographics will be a driver. The Canadian population is growing due to immigration. People coming from other countries will tend to stick with their traditional ways of doing the dishes or the laundry. It is difficult to get people to change their habits. Tide Pods require consumers to change the way they do their laundry. They will not be able to adjust the amount of detergent going into their machines. Pod products performed well in the UK but that is because the population of immigrants is several generations older and more likely to accept change.
