Packaging for alcoholic drinks in Canada can be characterised by strict adherence to traditional packaging types - or not - depending upon the beverage. In wine, glass bottles are the traditional pack type. While manufacturers have tried to convince Canadians to switch to PET or brick liquid cartons, on the whole, these attempts to influence consumer behaviour have failed. In spirits, however, Canadian consumers seem to have no problem switching to PET - but only for white spirits; darker spirits like brandy, cognac and whiskies still utilise mostly glass bottles. For white spirits glass bottles are on store shelves right next to PET bottles. In beer, Canadians are back to being traditionalists - the most popular pack type for beer is the glass bottle, although the metal beverage can is the faster growing pack type. However, RTDs has no sense of tradition. It is a relatively newer market addition, and Canadian consumers are accepting of most types of packaging.

Industry Prospects

Packaging used for alcoholic beverages is projected to remain level with a CAGR of fractionally over 0% over the forecast period to reach a market size of 7.4 billion units by 2016. In previous years, the forecast has been for PET to keep growing at a fast pace in the areas where Canadian consumers are accepting of it (ie white spirits, RTDs), while glass would take a bit of a back seat in terms of growth rates in these categories. In 2012, however, there was an aggressive marketing push being undertaken by manufacturers of glass to reclaim lost market share. This push is projected to keep going throughout the forecast period. This does not mean that growth of glass will overtake that of PET, it just means that the growth rate of PET will slow down while the decline of glass as a pack type (in areas where PET is a viable pack type) will correspondingly slow. The aggressive marketing of glass packaging material will also benefit manufacturers of wine and beer products - especially those manufacturers that rely on proprietary bottle shapes for their marketing strategies.
