In 2013, smoking tobacco continued to benefit from the legislation introduced in 2010 which caused prices of cigarettes to rise, with a growing number of smokers switching to or increasing shisha smoking. Even though taxation of smoking tobacco was also increased, smoking tobacco still remains more affordable in comparison with other tobacco types such as cigarettes or cigars.

Competitive Landscape

Unlike other tobacco products such as cigarettes and cigars, smoking tobacco in Egypt is characterised by a more competitive environment. In 2013, Al Nakhla Tobacco Co led the category with a volume share of 38%, followed by Eastern Co with a 27% share. Eastern Co, however, markets the leading brand in smoking tobacco, with its Moassel Salloum brand commanding a 27% share of sales. Moassel Salloum is an economically-priced brand which is also available as a flavoured pipe tobacco.

Industry Prospects

Given the challenging economic conditions in the country towards the end of the review period, the shift from cigarettes to smoking tobacco is set to continue. Over the forecast period smoking tobacco is set to post a volume CAGR of 5%, which will be an improvement on the review period CAGR of 4%. This performance is anticipated to be led by the increasing shift of light smokers towards shisha smoking as cigarette prices are set to rise at a faster rate than smoking tobacco, which has much lower unit prices. In addition, shisha smoking also has a wider appeal among female smokers, thus offering greater potential for growth.
