The widespread distribution of fake and counterfeit products remained a serious issue in fragrances in Iran in 2013. Smuggling of various premium brands through the western borders was common and these brands were sold at lower prices than official imports in large cities. It is estimated that more than half of the premium fragrances in a typical fragrance specialist outlet were smuggled and fake products, leaving little room for growth of retail volumes. However, due to the young population in Iran and their strong demand for different forms of fragrance the category witnessed strong growth rates over the review period, with value growth of 45% in 2013, which was higher than the review period CAGR of 38%, demonstrating the steady performance of this immature category in Iran in spite of the issue of smuggling and fake products.

Competitive Landscape

The fragrances category was very fragmented and included many players with low value shares. Prestige Qeshm, with its Guy Laroche, Azzaro pour Homme, Armani, and Cacharel brands, was the leader in fragrances, with a 10% value share in 2013. Availability was a key issue in terms of brand shares, as brands may be highly visible in one year and then may be harder to find during the next, making it difficult for consumers to remain loyal to specific brands. Furthermore, with so much choice in terms of both legal and illicit brands, consumers liked to try new products within the price range they could afford.

Industry Prospects

An increase in the young population is expected in Iran over the forecast period, along with major changes in the consumption patterns of Iranian consumers. Consequently, it is expected that fragrances will register a positive performance. As young consumers become more accustomed to using and purchasing fragrances frequently, they may even venture into the premium category which is expected to post healthy growth over the forecast period, with the higher prices of these products boosting value sales. In general, premium and mass fragrances are both expected to post value CAGRs of 4% at constant 2013 prices over the forecast period.
