Relatively high prices limit demand for cigars among lower income consumers, who make up the majority of the population. In recent years, the development of the entire category has been further undermined by steady growth in contraband trade.

Competitive Landscape

Tabacos & Puros Finos remained the clear leader in cigars in 2013 with a retail volume sales share of 44%, followed by Omega Cigars SA and Flor de Copan with shares of 21% and 16% respectively. Tabacos & Puros Finos offers a wide assortment of local and imported brands at lower prices than its main competitors. In addition to producing and importing cigars, the company is also active in the retail sale of these products. At the end of the review period, it had seven retail outlets in strategic locations across the country. Omega Cigars is the exclusive Guatemalan distributor of the premium Cuban brand Habanos, while Flor de Copan offers the Santa Rosa and Flor de Copan brands.

Industry Prospects

Growth in retail volume sales of cigars over the forecast period is expected to be slightly faster than during the review period.
