During 2013, deodorants continued to be threatened by mass fragrances, which come in various attractive aromas and packaging design. Mass fragrances also attempted to attract consumers from all income groups and age groups. In addition, deodorants was threatened by unfavourable press coverage, with scientific research linking antiperspirants with increased risks of breast cancer. With rising health awareness amongst urban consumers, this marginally impacted sales of deodorants, which is dominated by antiperspirants. Understandably, deodorants posted slower volume growth in 2013 than in 2012.

Competitive Landscape

Unilever Indonesia Tbk PT with its Rexona and Axe brands retained its leadership of deodorants with 49% value share in 2013. Despite its already strong position in deodorants during the review period, the company continued to invest heavily in new launches and promotional efforts, both below- and above-the-line activities. One of its new product launches during 2013 was Rexona Lotus F1 Team Special Edition targeting male consumers. The company’s deodorants were aggressively advertised on television as well as printed media and billboards during 2013.

Industry Prospects

The value contribution of male products is expected to continue rising over the forecast period, reaching 38% by 2018, up from 32% in 2013. Manufacturers are likely to recognise the huge potential for growth among male products; therefore they will continue launching new product variants and aggressively promoting their male deodorants over the forecast period. The ‘metrosexual’ trend is also likely to continue growing especially in urban areas, as more men will be increasingly exposed to international trends. This has the potential to increase demand for male products, which will boost overall performance of deodorants during the forecast period.
