Fast Food in the Netherlands - New Report Available

Fast food saw relatively high growth in value sales in 2013 as it is seen as both convenient and affordable. During these times of low consumer confidence, both the number of transactions and total spending have gone up. In 2013, sales for fast food started off slowly as the weather was very cold which meant consumers did not want to go out to buy fast food, however, during spring and the summer months, fast food profited from the exceptionally warm weather as it meant that consumers did not want to spend time indoors preparing food and went out more. Consumers were interested in quick and easy meals and consumers also spent more time on outdoor activities which also helped fast food to achieve healthy growth.

Competitive Landscape

McDonald’s is the biggest foodservice brand in the Netherlands and therefore also the leading player in the fast food category. The company operates 236 outlets in 2013 and this means it is not only the leading player in terms of sales value, but also in terms of the total number of outlets. In 2013, McDonald’s registered another positive year in terms of value growth as the company profits from the general trend towards chained outlets in fast food and the interest in value-for-money alternatives to for instance, full-service restaurants. Another reason for the positive performance is that the company is very strong when it comes to innovation and has been very active in its development of its menu in order to keep up with the changing demands of the consumer.

Industry Prospects

The outlook for the forecast period is positive although growth is not expected to reach the same level as it did during the review period. The recovery of the economy is the major reason for the lower growth. Fast food has profited from the negative consumer attitude towards more expensive types of foodservice during the review period and the forecasted slow improvement of the economy is likely to limit the growth of fast food.
