Market Report, "Womenswear in Germany", published

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Tue Oct 07 2014

During 2013, womenswear once again suffered from the sustained slowdown in the country’s economy, leading to reduced purchasing power among Italy’s female population. As a result, many Italian women are now reducing their spending on apparel. Women with families also tend to prefer to reduce their own spending in order to purchase new clothing for their children. As such, both volume and value of womenswear recorded declines in Italy during 2013.

Competitive Landscape

Max Mara remains the leading company in womenswear in Italy and in 2013 accounted for 5% of total retail value sales. Following in second position was Gruppo Tessile Miroglio with a 3% value share. Max Mara now offers less formal collections than before and focuses mainly on casual wear for girls and women. Moreover, Max Mara is known for the wide variety of clothing it offers as well as the originality and innovation of its design and its careful attention to detail in its designs.

Industry Prospects

Womenswear is expected to register a rather static performance in constant value terms over the forecast period. Even though the leading players in the category are expected to make attempts to focus on womenswear rather than on menswear during the forecast period, Italy’s leading apparel manufacturing companies are focusing mainly on catering to export demand due to the rising demand for Italian clothing in many countries around the world. This has resulted in many of the companies involved in womenswear in Italy moving in the direction of filling export orders primarily. More effort will be needed in order to regenerate demand for womenswear in Italy and strong decisions will have to be taken in order to avoid a complete collapse in demand during the forecast period. Much of this is set to be due to the European economic crisis, which is set to compromise the anticipated recovery of demand for womenswear in Italy.
