Tourism Flows Outbound in Venezuela - New Study Released

The number of departures grew by 11% in 2013 – a major increase from the 1% growth recorded in 2012. A devaluation of the domestic currency of almost 50% in February 2013 was not enough to dispel the widespread belief that another adjustment of the exchange rate was likely to happen. By mid-2013, Venezuelans started travelling abroad in such numbers that made it difficult to find a plane seat to the US, Panama or Ecuador. The goal was to receive the maximum amount of foreign exchange quotas – allotted by destination and length of stay – which are sold to travellers at the official (largely overvalued) exchange rate of Bs6.30/USD.

Industry Prospects

Over the forecast period, outbound travel is predicted to fall significantly. A combination of administrative changes in the foreign exchange regime and financial difficulties are behind the fall of 10% expected for outbound trips in 2014. However, overall the number of departures is projected to be flat at a CAGR of 0% over the forecast period.
