New market study, "Vitamins and Dietary Supplements in Germany", has been published

Vitamins and dietary supplements posted a current value decline of 3% in Germany in 2013. While there were multiple factors negatively influencing sales, much of the category’s value decline can be attributed to the favourable performance of private label products. Unsurprisingly, these cheaper alternatives resonated well with price-conscious German consumers. This was reflected in the strong positions of private label players such as Rossmann, Aldi Süd and Aldi Nord.

Competitive Landscape

In 2013, MCM Klosterfrau Vertriebsgesellschaft led vitamins and dietary supplements, closely followed by GlaxoSmithKline. The leading company was active with a handful of well-established brands. Nonetheless, second-ranked GlaxoSmithKline managed to grow at the leader’s expense, mainly due to its favourable position in vitamin C. The company’s Abtei Vitamin C Forte 1000 mg Brausetabletten brand in single vitamins grew by 2% in value terms, benefiting from the overall strong value sales in vitamin C in 2013. On the other hand, MCM Klosterfrau recorded a value sales decline of 1%. This can be largely attributed to the decline of Klosterfrau Melissengeist as well as the exit of Taxofit in vitamin A in 2013.

Industry Prospects

Vitamins and dietary supplements is expected to record a further value CAGR decline at constant 2013 prices over the forecast period. An anticipated lack of promotional activity and positive media coverage will likely result in an unchanged consumer perception of vitamins and dietary supplements. Experts are expected to continue to warn consumers about the harmful side effects of overdosing, which will be another factor behind sluggish demand.
