However, value sales increased, pushed by price increases, although the growth was considerably lower than in previous years.

Competitive Landscape

Like in many other countries, sales of cigarettes in the Netherlands are led by four multinationals. Philip Morris Holland was the biggest player in 2013, followed by British American Tobacco Netherlands and JT International Co Netherlands. Imperial Tobacco Netherlands ranked fourth.

Industry Prospects

The ongoing decline in volume sales of cigarettes is expected to continue over the forecast period, as a result of increasing taxation, a shift towards healthier lifestyles and government interventions. The Dutch government has announced further taxation in 2014, which will drive up the price of cigarettes, and this is expected to result in declining volume sales and increasing illicit trade. The revisions to the EU Tobacco Products Directive in 2015 onwards are expected to put further pressure on volume and value sales of cigarettes in the Netherlands.
