New Report Available: Tourism Flows Domestic in Australia

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Wed Oct 15 2014

Domestic travel slowed in 2013 with only 2% growth in visitor numbers, down from 6% in 2012. Whilst in previous years this strength in visitor numbers was fuelled by business travel, in 2013 it was largely due to a recovery of leisure travel. After several years of the Australian dollar appreciating to above parity with the US dollar, the value of the Australian dollar dipped in 2013, to around US$0.90. This has made outbound travel less attractive, with Australian holidaymakers deciding instead to holiday at home. Australian holidaymakers had enjoyed the opportunity to take advantage of Australia's attractive exchange rate to holiday overseas, but with the Australian dollar depreciating, such plans have been postponed and domestic holidays have returned to vogue. This has attracted back many of those holidaymakers who had previously purchased beach resort holidays in such destinations as Bali in Indonesia and Phuket in Thailand, who now feel more inclined to holiday on the Gold Coast or Cairns in Queensland.
