International arrivals to Indonesia grew at a robust double digit rate in 2013. The global recession primarily affected mature countries and slowed down growth rates for international arrivals in the past few years. Consequently, the recovery of the global economy had a positive impact on increasing the number of tourists arriving in Indonesia in 2013. Country sources showing stronger arrival growth include the US, Germany, France, and Japan. However, a growing number of tourists from emerging countries such as China, Russia and the Middle East are also visiting the country. BRIC (Brazil-Russia-India-China) countries have become the propellers of the global economy in the midst of the global economic downturn. Rapidly increasingly disposable incomes and the growing number of wealthy individuals in these emerging countries, particularly China, has benefited the global tourism industry.

Industry Prospects

The number of international arrivals is expected to continue growing strongly over the forecast period, with 12.9 million visits expected by 2018. Promotional campaigns held by the national tourism board in foreign countries are expected to generate positive results and increase awareness of the travel and tourism industry in Indonesia, especially in certain areas such as marine tourism, culinary or shopping tourism, health and wellness tourism, etc. The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy’s promotional board will also continue to actively engage in major events to attract international tourists coming to Indonesia such as annual sport events, including the upcoming golf tournament (the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters 2014). Besides aiming to increase the number of tourists, the ministry is also aiming to extend durations and increase expenditure per trip in order to boost overall travel and tourism income.
