Men in South Africa became increasingly interested in fashion during the review period, with a growing equation of fashion with status. While men traditionally regarded an interest in fashion as non-masculine, by the end of the review period a fashionable appearance was regarded as a sign of financial and social success. This shift was encouraged by the emergence of a new black high-income group enriched by the government's BEE programme and by widening internet access.

Competitive Landscape

Edcon was the leading player throughout the review period and accounted for almost 12% value share in 2013. This company benefits from offering a wide range of fashionable brands via its department stores and network of apparel specialist retailers. The company's Edgars department stores brand proved particularly successful in 2013, thanks to men increasingly prioritising quality and branding and also thanks to the introduction of a widening range of global brands. The company's lower-priced Jet brand also gained share in the year thanks to offering low prices and thus attracting the growing number of indebted consumers who are unable to further extend their credit. Edcon thus saw the strongest gain in share as a result in 2013 over the previous year, gaining half a percentage point in value share.

Industry Prospects

Men's fashion is expected to remain a strong driver of sales for men's outerwear in the forecast period. Young South African men are expected to continue to drive fashion trends, taking inspiration from global trends but also incorporating elements of traditional South African design, thus fuelling a strong 5% volume CAGR for "other" men's outerwear. With a median age of just 25-years-old in 2013, South Africa has a young population. As this young population gains widening access to the internet, consumers are expected to become more interested in fashion.
