Dermatologicals in the Netherlands - New Report Available

Dermatologicals growth in 2013 was positive yet slightly lower than the review period average, largely due to the slower sales progression (a decline in volume terms) of topical antifungals, the largest product category in value terms. Demand for those products has fallen due to a lack of product innovation and the growing competition from personal care products that offer more antibacterial claims, which people use preventively. In turn, this reduces the need for antifungals. Moreover, leading companies have diverted their efforts to more niche categories, such as vaginal antifungals, hair loss treatments and medicated shampoo, which offer better revenue growth prospects due to relatively low penetration. Their efforts have worked thus far in pushing consumers to break taboos.

Competitive Landscape

Bayer Consumer Care BV continued to lead the dermatologicals category in 2013, posting a 13% value share. It was followed by Novartis Consumer Health NV with 12%. Both companies rely on a core family of brands that are supported by strong marketing and widespread availability in all retail channels. These brands are led by topical antifungals Canesten (Bayer) and Lamisil (Novartis). Both brands are recognised for their reliability and are trusted by health professionals and consumers alike.

Industry Prospects

The dermatologicals category is expected to record a 1% value CAGR at constant 2013 prices over the forecast period. This reflects a slight slowdown compared to the review period CAGR of 2%, which will be due to the slower performance of key product categories, namely topical antifungals and topical germicidals/antiseptics as consumers switch to alternative products such as beauty and personal care products with antibacterial properties, a trend that is set to reduce the need for specific OTC products. Furthermore, health standards are expected to improve as awareness rises and the Dutch general public becomes more informed about how obesity and the lack of exercise can contribute to the development of severe skin conditions.
