The declining rate of fragrances slowed down compared to a 5% value CAGR seen over the review period, thanks to some economic recovery and the growing popularity of scented products in general. Whilst consumer expenditure is recovering due to Abenomics, the consumer perception that fragrances are luxury products upon which they should avoid making expenditures still permeates Japanese society, albeit not quite as much. Scented products such as scented fabric softeners or scented detergents have also helped to dispel consumers' resistance to fragrances.

Competitive Landscape

Fragrances is fragmented in Japan. "Various distributors" accounted for a 25% value share in 2013, with the leading distributor, Bluebell Japan, leading the field. Bluebell Japan has been operating in Japanese fragrances since 1954 and the company distributes 25 international fragrance brands, including Bvlgari and Gucci.
