Travel Retail in the Netherlands - New Market Report

Travel retail registered moderate but positive growth in value sales during 2013. However, the situation in the category is not particularly positive and there are many independent companies operating in travel retail in the Netherlands which are struggling and even some which are not expected to survive the forecast period. However, generally speaking, travel retail is recovering from the negative effects of the economic recession, even where some other travel retail categories are struggling. However, it should be noted that all of the growth in travel retail stems from the numerous online activities which are being conducted by various travel retailers as traditional travel agents and tour operators remain under severe pressure. Many travel retail outlets were forced to close their doors and cease trading during the review period and during 2013 this negative trend continued to build as numerous Dutch travel agents found it impossible to survive amidst the very harsh economic climate which remains in effect in the country. There simply is no room for so many travel agents to operate simultaneously in the Netherlands now that online retailing has essentially taken over the category. Many traditional travel retailers have also failed to invest in online retailing or develop modern concepts for their travel retail outlets, which has resulted in a steep decline in the number of outlets which are able to survive in recent years.

Industry Prospects

Travel retail in the Netherlands is expected to face a difficult year during 2014 as demand is expected to be very limited. However, over the longer term, the prospects are set to be more positive and travel retail is expected to begin seeing the start of a genuine recovery from 2014 onwards. This recovery is set to be driven mainly by online travel retail sales as offline retail sales are expected to continue experiencing a downward trend, although these decline are expected to become much less severe towards the end of the forecast period.
