From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Fri Nov 07 2014

The maturity of Taiwan's consumer electronics market , with high penetration rates for all core consumer electronics devices, means growth rates will underperform emerging markets in the APAC. However, in the context of other developed markets we have a positive outlook for Taiwan's consumer electronics market. We forecast grow th of 3. 3 % in 2014, with market value expected to reach USD 6.9 bn . W e identify several growth areas vendors can tap in an otherwise mature market, including large-screen, u ltra-HD and OLED TV sets , phablets and 4G smartphones. A key factor in this outlook is the short replacement rate for smartphones and tablets , a trend we expect to continue in 2014 with consumers not expecting the longevity delivered by PCs and TVs . There is however downside risk to this outlook from a China-led slowdown which could affect the Taiwan dollar and constrain d omestic discretionary spending.

Headline Expenditure Projections

Computer sales: USD2.9bn in 2013 to USD3.0bn in 2014, +3.5% in US dollar terms. We expect a stabilisation in desktop and notebook volumes, supported by the withdrawal of official support for the XP OS in April 2014, but it will be tablets that again outperform.

AV sales: USD1.8bn in 2013 to USD1.9bn in 2014, 2.6% in US dollar terms. Cannibalisation of digital camera sales by multifunctional smartphones and price erosion in the TV market has limited growth, but we expect a boost to sales from the FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Handset sales: USD1.9bn in 2013 to USD2bn in 2014, +3.5% in US dollar terms. Rising smartphone penetration will drive increases in market value, but with smartphone market saturation fast approaching growth rates are expected to slow markedly.
