New market study, "Home Furnishings in Indonesia", has been published

Indonesia’s property market was growing rapidly up to the end of the third quarter of 2013, both in housing (perumahan) for middle- and lower-income consumers by means of Kredit Kepemilikan Rumah (KPR or house loans), and also sales of premium condos and apartments in larger cities. This trend helped to fuel growth in 2013. In September 2013, Indonesia’s government increased interest rates, making it more expensive for consumers trying to buy houses through KPR loans.

Competitive Landscape

Indonesian home furnishings is crowded with a myriad of players, including generic or unbranded furniture offered mostly by home-based operators. Several noticeable brands with national scale distribution in their own outlets hold value share. In 2013, the leader in home furnishings was local company Hadinata Brothers, with 4% value share, offering furniture sets under its Ligna brand. Hadinata Bros has distribution centres in the main cities in Indonesia, covering the major islands of Java, Bali, Sumatera, Kalimantan and Sulawesi. Brand Ligna covers the complete range of furniture, ranging from bedroom, sitting, living and dining rooms, targeting mostly middle-income consumers.

Industry Prospects

Towards 2018, prospects for home furnishings will be in line with property growth in Indonesia, fuelled by expected growth in the economy and rising disposable incomes in this period. Continuous population growth, as well as a growing number of households will therefore also drive the need for housing. With land becoming increasingly limited, apartments will become more popular. Demand for home furnishings will follow suit, as most new homes are furnished with new furniture. At the same time, seasonal changes, preference or style trends will also drive spending on house redecorations or renovations. With modern styles and smaller sized homes, minimalism is likely to continue in trend over the forecast period.
