The construction and Infrastructure sector in the Czech Republic has turned the corner after several years of negative growth, with BMI forecasting marginal growth of 2.2% for the full year 2014. Macroeconomic factors still act as an impediment in attracting foreign investment, but strong fundamentals for the sector drive forecasts for a return to growth in the longer term. The power industry is likely to remain depressed following the cancellation of the Czech utility CEZ's long-delayed tender for two new nuclear reactors. Support from the EU is forecast to boost new projects from 2015 onwards.

The decline in macro-economic performance in the Czech Republic has severely affected private investment and the government's ability to fund infrastructure projects in the construction industry.

The following factors have shaped our overall bearish view for the infrastructure segment in the country:

* Transport Could See Funding Cuts: The Directorate for Roads and Motorways (RSD) in the Czech Republic has indicated that the transport segment is likely to see significant budget cuts between 2014 and 2016. The RSD expects only CZK35bn to be allocated for transport during 2014, which will be followed by just CZK22bn and CZK4bn in 2015 and 2016 respectively. The RSD, however, hopes these figures will be revised to CZK33bn for 2014 and CZK25bn for 2015 under the new government.
* End To Renewable Energy Subsidy: The Czech Senate has passed into law a policy that will cut a number of state subsidies for developers of renewable energy projects in the country. The Czech Republic's long-term energy strategy focuses on meeting as much as 80% of its energy requirements from domestic sources, as then Czech Prime Minister Petr Necas revealed in November 2012. For this, the country is pinning hopes on nuclear as well as various forms of renewable energy.
