Czech consumers continued to like to have a proper lunch during 2013. The younger generation opted more for quick lunches at fast food restaurants, but middle-aged consumers and the older generation preferred to visit full-service restaurants during their lunch breaks. The majority of full-service restaurants offer special daily menus at advantageous prices and accept meal vouchers. Meal vouchers are popular job benefits and Czechs spend them mostly at foodservice outlets.

Competitive Landscape

The majority of full-service restaurants in the country are operated by small local entrepreneurs with a maximum of five outlets. There were five main chains of full-service restaurants in the Czech Republic as of 2013, TGI Friday’s, Svejk Restaurant, Ambiente, Pizza Coloseum and Hacienda Mexicana. Daos Plus, the operator of European full-service restaurant chain Svejk Restaurant, remained the top company in full-service restaurants in 2013, though its value sales dropped by 2% due to the severe competition within the category. Despite this, the chain of Svejk Restaurant outlets, operated on a franchise basis, was popular among both Czech consumers and foreign tourists. Foreign visitors appreciate the good quality of traditional Czech cuisine and Pilsner beer that is served here and the environment of the outlets. These premises are decorated in keeping with the spirit of Jaroslav Hašek’s heroic soldier Josef Švejk and the outlets are decorated with original illustrations by Josef Lada.
