New Report Available: In-Car Entertainment in Indonesia

There were a growing number of navigation applications available for free to mainly Android users during the review period including the famous Google Map. For this reason, growth of in-car navigation was stunted from what was expected, especially as car unit sales grew to reach 1.22 million units during 2013. Therefore, sales of in-car navigation approximately accounted for 3% share of total new car sales during the year. Unlike in-dash media players which are included/built-in when purchasing a new car, a navigation device does not come by default and car owners have to purchase this separately. The low volume sales are fairly attributable to the wide availability of GPS navigation through portable devices such as smartphones and tablets. Moreover, in-car navigation also still bears a significant high unit price compared to low end range of smartphones and tablets, narrowing further the customer base of the product into the middle-high income segment.

Industry Prospects

Despite obstacles faced by in-car entertainment over the review period continuing throughout the forecast period, the category is still expected to record double-digit retail volume growth owing to growing disposable incomes or a growing consumer base in the upper income segment. Indonesian consumers, who are also pop music oriented, will remain in favour of a good-quality sound system which in turn will boost sales for in-dash audio players as well as in-dash media players and car speakers across the forecast period.
