Recent Study: Contact Lenses in the US

Internet retailing of contact lenses continued to grow in 2014 to reach US$728 million, passing the US$700 million mark for the first time. E-commerce channels have been successful in this field because they are able to offer convenience and have successfully marketed themselves as being the most affordable. While buying contact lenses online is almost always going to be cheaper than buying them at an optician’s office, there is strong evidence that suggests that pharmacies are still able to offer the best available price to consumers. Nonetheless, e-commerce channels are loaded with words and phrases, such as "Savings", "Free Shipping", and "Special Deals", which appeal to the budgetary inclinations of consumers. That being said, it is the convenience offered by these e-commerce channels, coupled with reliable customer service, which is most responsible for winning over consumers to the point that internet retailing is now responsible for 15% of retail sales in the contact lens category. Moreover, the steady influx of new e-commerce competitors has not only raised consumer awareness regarding the existence of these viable and reliable channels, but it has also created a very competitive environment which will keep prices down and service great.

Industry Prospects

Contact lenses is expected to grow at a value CAGR of 3% at constant 2014 prices during the forecast period. The growth will be primarily driven by the growth in daily disposable lenses as well as weekly/monthly disposable lenses. Presbyopia rates are on the rise and will continue into the forecast period, which will benefit contact lenses. The prescriptions they will require will increase, and along with that increase will be an increase in more complicated requirements. Previous contact lens wearers will not only require their original prescription but other additions to help with the presbyopia.
