New research in 2012 found that even low doses of the hormone-disturbing substance bisphenol A could have damaging effects. Bisphenol A was detected in the closures of many baby food packaging products. As a result, the Swedish government banned the use of bisphenol A in packaging for baby food. All leading manufacturers, including Semper, Nestlé and Hipp, changed their closures and quickly introduced new ones that were free from bisphenol A.

Industry Prospects

Food safety is a key factor in baby food. This includes not only the food itself, but also the packaging. Packaging for baby food must fulfil strict demands for zero impact on the baby from the packaging. The ban on bisphenol A in packaging for baby food reflects this situation. From this standpoint, glass and carton are well-established materials. Plastic-based packaging is increasing in popularity and has many advantages in terms of weight, convenience, being crush-proof etc. However, if there any new research were to come out that points out that plastic-based packaging is harmful in any way, it could have a negative impact on the use of such pack types.
