Brazil Telecommunications Report Q1 2015 - New Study Released

Brazilian telecommunications sector is expected to see a number of wide-scale acquisitions and consolidation next year, which is likely to see the structure of the sector reorganised. Brazil telecoms operator OI is looking for a potential merger deal with TIM Brasil, another local telecoms operator. OI is also looking for a merger deal with Portugal Telecom . Telefônica Brazil's board of directors reportedly approved a capital increase to fund the takeover of Vivendi's GVT, while América Móvil's is advancing with the merger of its three Brazilian subsidiaries Claro, NET Servicos and Embratel . In terms of growth, BMI believes that Brazilian mobile and fixed-line markets will be expanding. Recent spectrum auction will be adding growth to the 3G/4G market.

* Anatel reported 278.48mn mobile subscribers in the first three quarters of 2014, up 1% from 275.71mn in H114 and 2.7% y-o-y. This is almost in line with the figures reported by the four largest mobile operators which totalled 275.61mn for the same period..
* Strong broadband subscription growth continued, with total wireline subscriptions reaching 20.882mn at the end of September 2013, up from 18.591mn a year earlier.
* M2M connections reach 9.1mn at the end of June 2014, up by19.8% y-o-y. This had increased to 9.21mn by August 2014.

Telefónica revised its offer for GVT following news that Telecom Italia would reportedly offer a deal worth EUR7bn to acquire Vivendi's Brazilian broadband unit GVT, surpassing the initial EUR6.7bn bid from Telefónica earlier in August 2014. Telefônica Brazil's board of directors reportedly approved a capital increase to fund the takeover of Vivendi's GVT in November 2014. Under the EUR7bn (USD9.3bn) deal signed by Telefónica and Vivendi in September, Telefónica will issue 500mn ordinary and preferred shares, raising its total capital stock from 1.35bn to 1.85bn.
