In 2014 political uncertainty and baht depreciation were a drag on spending growth, resulting in uneven growth as the computer hardware and AV segments contracted, but handset sales continued to grow . However, this pattern is forecast to change as the economy strengthens from 2015, and we expect a revival in PC sales, while at the same time the smartphone market is expected to slow as a result of saturation and price erosion. There will also be trends across market segments, for instance, we expect d emand will be boosted by price competition between vendors, with a number of global vendors targeting the market for growth, as well as operator investment in data network expansion and digital TV migration. Over the medium term our outlook for consumer electronics spending is positive as incomes rise, and the declining price of devices in key product categories will ensure the market continues to grow.

Headline Expenditure Projections

Computer Hardware Sales: USD2.95bn in 2014 to USD3.17bn in 2015, an increase of 7.6%. Tablet sales are booming, but there will also be a boost to notebook sales as a result of deferred purchases during 2014.

Handset Sales: USD3.42bn in 2014 to USD3.48bn in 2015, an increase of 1.7%. After a boom in handset market value 2011-2014 growth is set to slow as smartphone market saturation approaches and price competition intensifies.
