Self-service cafeterias in Ireland recorded strong positive growth in 2013, driven by growth in outlet numbers within chains with Dunnes Stores Plc increasing outlet numbers from 18 to 23. Whilst value performance in independents was positive, growing by 1%, outlet numbers declined by 3% with some operators struggling to remain viable in a market demanding low prices and increased value for money as well as increased pressure from the thriving fast food market.

Competitive Landscape

Dunnes Stores Plc is the leading player with a 29% value share in 2013. Dunnes has entered into a period of renewal and reinvigoration in recent years in an attempt to promote a more upmarket image than that which it had previously held, and seeking to set itself apart from retailers such as Penny’s (Primark) within apparel retailing, to which it had previously been closely associated in consumers’ minds. Stores, including cafeteria facilities, have been refurbished to appear brighter and airier, with the retailer finally conceding to the need for a strong internet presence also. By increasing the number of cafeteria outlets and improving facilities the company is seeking to position itself more in-line with operators such as Marks & Spencer’s Café Revive, which itself accounted for 21% value share and is ranked second

Industry Prospects

Self-service cafeterias is expected to record a value CAGR of 1% at constant 2013 prices, over the forecast period to 2018. The recent surge in outlet numbers is not expected to continue over the longer term, with the majority of suitable Dunnes Stores outlets now outfitted and operational. Furthermore, self-service cafeterias in Ireland tend to be large in size, far bigger than modern fast food outlets for example, with higher associated overheads and operating costs. Value too will be of key concern to consumers going forward, limiting the scope for price increases and ensuring that margins remain tight for the duration of the period.
