However, the huge demand from consumers encouraged on-trade players, especially fast food companies, to introduce products such as soymilk or soy drinks, which caused retail value growth to slow down in 2014. For example, leading fast food players KFC and McDonald’s both introduced other hot drinks products to their breakfast combinations, thus, the meal combinations gained popularity because sales of hot drinks through the foodservice channel increased. At the same time, some powdered soy milk manufacturers, which used to record better performance in on-trade channels, started selling their products through retail distribution channels – some gained popularity by claiming to supply the products used by the fast food giants. For example, Long Wang, which supplied powdered soy drinks to KFC, sold its products in retail channels. However, it takes time for on-trade soy drink providers to develop retail channels for further growth.

VV Group maintained its leading position in other hot drinks in 2014 with a retail value share of 7%. With a wide range of product portfolio in this sector as well as national wide distribution, the company wins high awareness with its brand Wei Wei. However, as the company saw with new product development slowdown throughout 2014, its growth rate also decreased a little bit than 2013.
