Changing lifestyle patterns continued to affect value sales of digestive remedies in 2014. Primarily, Norwegians live more active and hectic lives, combining travel and sports with career and family. Consequently, as the frequency of travel increases so did the sales of motion sickness remedies. Furthermore, hectic lifestyles tend to bring an increase in incidence of ulcers and heartburn, resulting in rising sales of antacids. Lastly, an ageing Norwegian population supported growth of digestive remedies, where, for example, laxatives was predominantly driven by the elderly.

Competitive Landscape

Johnson & Johnson Consumer Nordic continues to lead value sales of digestive remedies with an 18% value share in 2014. Digestive remedies is highly fragmented where all other players have a value share of 10% or less. Johnson & Johnson has more than five different products: Mircolax, Pepcid, Imodium, Imodium Comp and Imogas, spanning more than four different main product areas and leading in value sales in two of them ie diarrhoeal remedies and H2 Blockers. Strong brand names such as Imodium and Pepcid are well-known both in Norway and abroad, which benefited the company.

Industry Prospects

Delivery problems with Pepcid Duo in Norway during the review period considerably changed the dynamics of H2 blockers. The brand went from a 62% value share in 2009 to negligible size in 2013. The drastic contraction in sales was due to relocation of the manufacturing plant from the US to Europe and regulation arising from that move. Pepcid Duo is expected to be re-launched in Norway in 2015 which will result in changes to the competitive landscape. However, it is possible that it will be difficult for the brand to regain the position it once had given that other brands gained acceptance among Norwegian consumers.
