Sales of sugar confectionery continued to be under pressure, with current value growth of just 2% in 2014. This slower growth was due to Taiwanese concerns about too much sugar harming the health, making parents unwilling to buy candy for their children. Growth therefore slowed.

Competitive Landscape

Taiwan Morinaga Co was the leading player in Taiwan in 2014. The company was famous for its milky chews since the 70s and now these milky chews became popular again. Taiwan’s economy flourished in the 70s and 80s and there was a baby boom. Adult consumers now eat these milky chews in memory of the good old times. The company also developed a good distribution network, in comparison with other old confectionery companies, by selling through convenience stores. The company also introduced new flavours such as red bean and green tea to push sales. In addition, its fruit-flavoured Hi-Chew series had a high juice content and sometimes vitamin C add-ons to promote a healthier confectionery image. These products were more similar to Japanese / Korean imported confectionery items in terms of their unusual flavourings (such as lychee) and vividly coloured packaging.
